IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) skin rejuvenation, also known as IPL photofacial or IPL facial, is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses broad-spectrum light to address various skin concerns and improve the overall appearance and texture of the skin. IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, uses the heat from light energy to target certain colours in the structures of the skin known as chromophores. These include melanin, haemoglobin, and water. The heat causes destruction of the targeted lesion, reducing the appearance or completely clearing it from the surface of the skin. It can effectively target issues such as sun damage, age spots, redness, uneven pigmentation, and fine lines. Here’s how IPL skin rejuvenation typically works:
Consultation: The process begins with a consultation and test patch, which but be completed at least 72 hours prior to the full treatment. This will evaluate your skin condition, discuss your concerns and goals, and determine if you are a suitable candidate for IPL skin rejuvenation. Pre and post-treatment instructions will be given, such as avoiding sun exposure or certain skincare products.
Preparation: Before the procedure, the treatment area is usually cleansed, and cooling ultrasound gel is applied to enhance comfort and protect the skin’s surface.
Treatment: During the treatment, a handheld device emitting intense pulsed light is passed over the targeted area. The light energy is absorbed by the skin’s chromophores, such as melanin or hemoglobin, depending on the specific concern being addressed. This leads to a controlled heating effect in the targeted areas, stimulating collagen production and promoting skin rejuvenation.
Sensation: You may feel a mild snapping or stinging sensation during the treatment, similar to the snapping of a rubber band against the skin. However, the discomfort is typically minimal and well-tolerated.
Sessions: IPL skin rejuvenation usually requires multiple treatment sessions, spaced several weeks apart. The exact number of sessions depends on various factors, including the specific concern being treated and the individuals skin condition. Each session helps to gradually improve the appearance of the skin.
Aftercare: After the treatment, you may experience some mild redness, similar to a sunburn, which usually subsides within a few hours or days. It’s important to follow any post-treatment instructions provided, such as avoiding sun exposure, using sunscreen, and practicing a proper skincare routine.
IPL skin rejuvenation can help improve the overall quality of the skin, reduce the appearance of pigmentation irregularities, and promote a more youthful and even complexion. However, it’s important to note that IPL may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with certain skin conditions or who are pregnant
"I first had a course of IPL many years ago when I first started noticing the signs of ageing on my face, neck, and chest, and was so happy when I found Nue Clinic, which is local to me, offered this treatment. I came in for a consultation and test patch and explained to Babs my concerns with my skin. Now being a few years older, my skin was starting to look crepey and some age spots were also appearing. Babs suggested a course of IPL treatment on my face, neck, and chest, which would not only help plump the skin and soften the lines but would also help to lighten the pigmentation. My skin now feels baby soft and looks clearer and so much brighter. I’d suggest IPL to anyone."
